Laura Purdie Salas does a wonderful job of bringing poetry to young students in a school setting This anthology of poems manages to touch on some very real social issues children must deal with in and out of the classroom In New Mouse the student is figuring her way around a new school with dead ends hallways that all look the same and too many ways to get from one place to the next In PU the boy is presenting during sharing time and passes gas to the shock of himself and the rest of the class All the poems have a lightness to them even those dealing with some personal or touching issues The watercolor illustrations by Steven Salerno add to the ease and comic relief of children's misfortune or daily trials The poems are mostly rhymes which I believe are fun and easy for my primary students to follow I would be able to use this book as a model in beginning our poetry lessons We could go back to see what the type of poem actually is to try to use that style
