This seuel is mostly as good as the first bookThe twins Ndoro and Obaseki continue to go their separate ways until dreams and spirits force them back together Ndoro transforms the slave nation of Diaka into an army powerful enough to take on his Sesu homeland and Obaseki becomes the healer and spiritual leader of the TuaregMost of the cultures in the previous book were fictional as far as I could tell but there were direct references to the real Africa such as the Songhai empire the Tuareg desert nomads and the Maghreb region More fantasy elements are apparent here such as the were lion reincarnation of the evil medicine priest Mulugo from the previous book and the crocodile spirit Nakisisa who follows NdoroInaamdura became an obvious villain in this book which was a bit disappointing She was interesting in the previous book because she was an ambitious woman in a male dominated society but here she just poisons people and uses evil magicMeji is a uick and entertaining read that's good for those who want something different from the generic medieval European fantasy
